On Shrink Rap some advice on sleep hygiene and medication used for sleep troubles.
I fully agree with this quote, not sleeping during depression is a symptom of depression. Benzodiazepines work only for a couple of days. The advantage of benzodiazepines is that patients sleep worse but don't complain. In due course getting of benzodiazepines is hell. Better wait for the antidepressant to work or in some cases the antidepressant will sedate.
If the patient presents with depression, I hope that as the depression resolves, the sleep disturbance will resolve. Some anti-depressants are so sedating (TCAs, Remeron, Serzone, Trazodone) that they are effectively sleeping pills. Other times the anti-depressant, especially SSRIs, cause the sleep disturbance.
